A garage door is just another gate — a big one that happens to be attached to your house. So the same idea applies: you do not need to rip out the opener to control it from your phone. With a smart controller wired to your existing motor, your garage door becomes something you can open, close and check from anywhere. Here is how it works and what to look for.

What a smart garage door opener actually is

“Smart” here rarely means a whole new motor. It means adding a small controller to the garage opener you already have, so it can be triggered over the internet and report whether the door is open or closed. You keep your existing wall button and remotes; the smart layer sits alongside them.

  • Open and close from your phone — pulling onto the drive, or from across town.
  • Check the status — did someone leave the garage open? See it at a glance and close it remotely.
  • Let people in without being there — a family member, a delivery, a tradesperson.
  • Automate it — tie it into a smart home so it responds to routines.

How to make your garage door smart

  1. Find the opener’s trigger terminals — the same contacts your wall button uses.
  2. Wire in a smart controller across those terminals so it can pulse the door open or closed.
  3. Add a position sensor if you want accurate open/closed status in the app.
  4. Connect it to the cloud and pair the app.

What to look for

Prioritise a controller that: works with your opener brand (a universal trigger-based unit is safest), gives real open/closed status rather than just firing blind, supports multiple users, and secures the connection.
